Event description

What should we think about machines outsmarting humans?

For centuries, philosophy has asked questions about what makes us human. Now AI forces us to confront these questions with unprecedented urgency. What is the nature of mind? Can consciousness emerge from computation?

These aren't just academic questions anymore—they're engineering challenges with profound implications for how we understand ourselves.

We invite you to join us as Toby Walsh, Chief Scientist at UNSW.ai speaks on 'The AI Singularity'.

Toby Walsh

Toby Walsh is Chief Scientist at UNSW.ai, UNSW’s new AI Institute. He is a Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW Sydney, and he is also an adjunct fellow at CSIRO Data61. He was named by the Australian newspaper as a “rock star” of Australia’s digital revolution.

Professor Walsh is a strong advocate for limits to ensure AI is used to improve our lives. He has been a leading voice in the discussion about autonomous weapons (aka “killer robots”), speaking at the UN in New York and Geneva on the topic. His advocacy in this area has led to him being “banned indefinitely” from Russia. He appears regularly on TV and radio, and he has written five books on AI for a general audience, the most recent is "Faking It! Artificial Intelligence in A Human World" and the soon to be released “Shortest History of AI”.
