Description

Discover the birds, mammals and plants of the Fleurieu Coast!

Did you know that there are beach-nesting birds that lay their eggs in a shallow scrape in the sand? After hatching the downy young will leave the nest within a day or two and must make their way to the water’s edge to feed. Have you heard that coastal vegetation impacts the availability of breeding sites for beach-nesting birds? Have you heard about the migratory shorebirds that fly from the northern hemisphere to rest and feed here and of the migration of whales that come to our shores?

Our coastal environments need community action to help protect them. Hear from a range of speakers that will introduce you to the diversity of life on the Fleurieu Coast. Learn how to support coastal conservation and about the opportunities for further involvement, like becoming a BirdLife Australia volunteer! Then join us for a beach walk where we will observe some of the diversity of the coast.

The Sharing our Shores with Coastal Wildlife Program on the Adelaide Metro coast and Fleurieu Peninsula is coordinated through Birdlife Australia’s Sharing our Shores with Coastal Wildlife Project staff and supported by the Green Adelaide Board. It is funded primarily through the Green Adelaide Board with additional support from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, administered by the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board. It is further supported by BirdLife Australia’s National Beach-nesting Bird team and resources. The work is undertaken in collaboration with Adelaide Metro and Fleurieu coastal councils and relies on dedicated support from trained BirdLife Australia volunteers.
