The APPLE - the best worst movie ever made
Event description
Have you ever watched a dystopian scifi that explores a bleak totalitarian world such as 1984 or The Handmaiden’s Tale and thought, “Hey, I wish this was a musical… no wait… a disco musical!”? WELL GUESS WHAT! I have the movie for you!
THE APPLE (1980) is set in the far off future of 1994 where an music executive named MR BOOGALOO runs the world through his omni-corporation Boogaloo International Music that has GASP outlawed love songs. Everyone is forced to conduct mandatory daily disco dance routines by a fascist secret police. It’s as if the Taliban was run by ABBA.
MR BOOGALOO is outraged when a pair of wholesome folk singers, Alfie and Bibi from Moosejaw, Canada, win his EVIL EUROVISION with DOUBLE GASP! a LOVE SONG! There is only one thing to do – tempt them to renounce their wholesome ways and come to the dark side of disco in a series of inept musical numbers that play out like the inbred bastard lovechildren of Andrew Lloyd Webber and George Orwell.
And throw in a double-dose of FAUST as well, as this movie is not only a dystopian scifi, it is also a biblical allegory! Bet you didn’t see that coming in a movie called THE APPLE! With roller-disco dance numbers that take place in literal hell, as well as a futuristic America that looks suspiciously like 1980s Berlin, The APPLE is a feast for the senses, but only if that feast is comprised of week old McDonalds.
Will GOD turn up in the third act in a magical flying rolls Royce? Is it true that this movie was so bad the director attempted suicide? And just how overt can an allegory be before it becomes insulting? There is only one way to find out – and that’s join us when we decide if this movie is RAD, BAD or MAD!
