The Art of Belonging: an arts-based exploration into what matters

This event has passed Register

Event description

This is a 2-hour in-person experiential workshop to inquire into the topic of belonging through artmaking.

Many of us spend our busy lives trying to tick things off our “to-do” lists. We often go with the flow, and it may be that we have settled into a familiar pace in a familiar environment - whether we like it or not. And then, one small challenge, a little push to the unfamiliar, and the crack opens where we find ourselves wondering who we are and what we’re doing right now.

Others might feel like a fish out of water and that, at this given time, we’re somehow out of synch with ourselves and what’s around us.

Changing careers, moving to a new city, ending a relationship or starting a new one, joining a new community… there are many life circumstances that can bring us to wonder, “Who am I now?” and “Where do I fit?”

Join us in this experiential workshop to engage in arts-based co-inquiry and group reflection and explore how and where we can co-create a place where we belong together.

This workshop is for you if you want to explore your sense of self, your underlying needs and values and what helps you feel anchored

Please note this workshop is for adults 18+

No experience with arts-based inquiries or specific art techniques/ materials is required.

About the facilitators

Kim Swan and Marta Callizo will facilitate this workshop. Kim and Marta have been collaborating and co-creating for many years, first in the roles of teacher (Kim) and MIECAT student (Marta) and later as work colleagues.

Kim Swan comes from a teaching and performing arts background and completed her MIECAT Masters in 2010. She is completing her Professional Doctorate at MIECAT, which explores how therapeutic arts-based practice supports integration when we are stuck in entrenched patterns that are difficult to shift. Kim currently coordinates the Masters Course at MIECAT and also enjoys teaching in the program. She recently relocated from Melbourne to the Hepburn/Daylesford area, where she is artfully inquiring into some of the content we will explore in this workshop.

Marta Callizo is originally from Barcelona, where she graduated as an architect and later completed her Masters at MIECAT as a research student. Her personal and professional experiences urged Marta to explore the experiences of belonging, connection and identity, a topic that is still well and truly alive for her. Marta joined the MIECAT team as an academic staff member in 2018, and she currently combines online teaching from Barcelona with face-to-face facilitation from Melbourne as a sessional teacher.

Workshop Location: The MIECAT Institute, 15 Victoria St, Fitzroy VIC 3065
