Feathers and Fur! The art of creating pictures of birds and animals in a variety of mediums.

What will be covered in this course?

Through demonstrations and a variety of exercises and handouts, you will learn how to draw up and be led on an experimental journey with various mixed media materials and processes including inks, pastels, acrylics, charcoal and a variety of printmaking techniques to create interesting backgrounds and surface textures to draw and paint birds and animals on.

You will learn how to render the fur of different animals and the fine plumage of different birds.

By the end of this course students will:

Students will be able to confidently draw up and experiment with different mediums to create lively, energetic, modern and colourful representations of birds or animals. You could create an artwork of your much-loved pet!

THIS CLASS IS FOR: This class is suitable for absolute beginners to intermediate/advanced ages 16+

TIME: Thursday mornings 9.30 am – 12.30 pm

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Some materials will be provided

  • Pencils - graphite 2B, 4B,6B
  • ERASERS- Plastic, kneadable
  • Pens- 2 Artline 0.2, 0.5
  • Roll of paper towel
  • A3 sketch pad cartridge/ Mixed media paper eg Renoir University pad
  • Acrylic paints- variety of colours
  • Soft Pastels - suggest Micador set as an inexpensive set
  • Willow Charcoal
  • Spray Fixative
  • Variety of brushes eg ½ inch flat, 1 inch flat, small round, #6&10 flat brush
  • Water container
  • Palette
  • Glue or binder medium
  • Sheets of photocopy paper
  • Water sprayer
  • Stanley knife
  • Hair-dryer
  • Large canvas for final artwork Eg 20 x 30 “
  • Any other materials you have eg colour pencils

ABOUT THE TUTOR 

Julianne Gosper has 25+ years experience both as a practising artist and Art teacher  in both secondary schools and T.A.F.E. 

She holds a B.A in Fine Arts, U.N.S.W and a Diploma in Arts Education from Deakin University. 

She has won numerous awards including The Bendigo Art prize, the Louis Ellem Art Prize and in 2021 she was also selected as a finalist in the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award.

Julianne loves to explore and experiment in a variety of mediums to produce energetic, large scale artworks capturing the essence of her subject matter.

She loves to share her knowledge and skills to inspire others with a particular focus on experimentation and having fun. 

Julianne has a particular interest in advocating the benefits of the Arts for Wellbeing. For the past several years she has worked with Special needs students developing an Arts Enrichment Program focussing on improving mental health building confidence and self esteem.
