The Art of Story Design with Laurel Cohn

    Tuesday 6 August 10am — 4pm

Byron Community Centre, 69 Jonson St, Byron Bay NSW 2481
    $200 - General | $155 Byron Writers Festival Members & Concessions

Theme. Plotlines. Characters. Point of view. Backstory. Voice.

These elements, all crucial for writers to understand, are often considered separately. While this is extremely valuable, the artistry in developing work for publication lies in understanding how these elements interrelate, how they work together to create your story design. And how this design determines not only the way the story on the page unfolds, but also the relationship between the writer and reader and between the reader and the characters and events on the page.

Through exercises and readings, this workshop introduces strategies to help you understand the bigger picture of your works-in-progress, to consider the types of decisions that affect your story design, and to deepen your awareness of what you are wanting to say and how to say it.

    About Laurel Cohn

Since the late 1980s Laurel has been helping writers of all types prepare their work for publication. With a well-honed ability to analyse and critique texts, she gets a buzz out of helping writers understand how they can lift their work to the next level of development.

Laurel’s approach to giving feedback is informed by an understanding of the sometimes tricky emotional terrain of the development process, and the importance of honest, clear and practical guidance.

Laurel is a regular workshop presenter for peak writing organisations in Australia, and also teaches in Europe. She has a PhD in literary and cultural studies.

This workshop is a part of the Byron Writers Festival 2024 and is designed as an 18+ event. Any questions please get in touch with the office on 02 6685 1155 or tickets@byronwritersfestival.com
