Eugene Ionesco is one of the major artists considered as "absurdists". "The Bald Prima Donna" since 1957 has been in permanent showing at the Théâtre de la Huchette, which received a Molière d'honneur for its performances. It holds the world record for the play that has been staged continuously in the same theatre for the longest time.[1][2] Although it went unnoticed at first, the play was eventually championed by a few established writers and critics and, in the end, won critical acclaim. By the 1960s, The Bald Soprano had already been recognized as a modern classic and an important seminal work in the Theatre of the Absurd. With a record number of interpretations, it has become one of the most performed plays in France.[3]" (Wikipedia)

In a tiny theatre in Paris, the same play has been performed every single night (except Sundays!) since 1957. “The Bald Soprano” holds the current world record for the longest-running play staged in the same theatre. And one actor, Roger Defossez, has been performing the same role for nearly 60 years. Even after more than 6,000 shows, he continues to greet every performance with enthusiasm.

"In its most famous scene, two strangers—who are exchanging banalities about how the weather is faring, where they live, and how many children they have—stumble upon the astonishing discovery that they are indeed man and wife; it is a brilliant example of Ionesco’s recurrent themes of self-estrangement and the difficulty of communication."
