A new and fun approach to competition!

The Barista Open is a head-to-head knock-out regional competition designed to lower the barrier to entry for competitors, and involve more regions and bring people together!

This throwdown-style battle consists of 3 simple rounds:

Dial-in and Set up (5 mins)
Introduction (1 min)
Service time (7 mins)

Two baristas go head to head, serving 3 course to the judges within their service time.

Espresso Course

2 × single-shot espressos

Milk Beverage Course

2 × single-shot milk beverages (e.g., flat white, piccolo, or latte)

Alternative Milk Beverage Course

2 × single-shot Oat beverages (e.g., flat white, piccolo, or latte)

Judges will taste and select one competitor per course, with all votes revealed at the end of each round using paddles.

barista’s personality, adaptability and skills to the test, through a
format that is similar to day-to-day service in a cafe.

All necessary equipment will be provided by the hosting cafe and NZSCA, so all you need to do is bring yourself!

The winner from each region will receive paid entry into the Meadow Fresh Aotearoa Barista Champs, along with support from NZSCA to help prepare for the national stage, through a buddy programme that offers connection and support from previous and experienced competitors to those new and emerging.
