A bit about us as an organisation...
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wellington was established in June 2018. During this time, we have helped over 50 local children with the provision of positive, fun mentoring relationships. Creating a strong sense of whanaungatanga is at the core of the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme in Aotearoa. Many of our children feel disillusioned and experience adversity through family or environmental circumstances. The Growing Up in New Zealand study found that one in four New Zealand children live in households with three or more risk factors indicating adversity. Through long term, meaningful friendships with their tuakana/mentor our young people feel cared for and valued, become enlightened, empowered and view themselves, their whānau, and their community in a more positive way.
Big Brothers Big Sisters provide friendships which build, strengthen and empower our children, fostering their resilience for a more positive future. Our vision is whakatū tuakana whakakohe, whakamana a taiohi - to enable life changing mentoring relationships which ignite the power and potential of our young people/taiohi.
Each volunteer mentor/tuakana is matched with one child/Teina. They hang out together for one hour/or one session, each week, for at least one year. It is really important mentors can fulfil the time commitment as this is how our young people build trust and take benefit from the program. The mentor/tuakana, child/teina and child’s caregivers are all supported by professionally trained staff for the lifetime of the match.
