Indian Rhythms and Community Drum Circle
Event description
Come enjoy an evening of Indian music and rhythms with tabla and flute player Naren Chirmule (father of Studio 34 yoga teacher Anisha Chirmule). Naren will describe the “rhythms of India” and coordinate a drum circle. Bring your own drums, any rhythm-making instruments, including your hands!
Doors open at 7:00 PM with music starting shortly thereafter. There will be chai and sweets, and all donations support arts programming at Studio 34.
*Note: This event was previously listed as "The Bike & Six Strings Band," but we later learned that's Naren's project over in Pune, India and not here in Philly!
Naren Chirmule has a deep passion for Indian classical music, which extends across a wide range of musical genres. An amateur Tabla player for over 30 years, he has performed with both amateur and professional artists in styles spanning Hindustani and Carnatic classical, Bollywood, Jazz, Latin, and fusion. He volunteers with the Rupak School of World Music in Los Angeles, supporting the promotion and education of classical music.
More recently, Naren has taken up learning the Indian classical flute and enjoys leading community drum circles—a practice he developed through his experiences at Remo Drums in Los Angeles.
Professionally, Naren is a scientist and author of Good Genes Gone Bad, a book reflecting on lessons from failed drug development programs. He teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and several IITs in India. Currently, he is a biotechnology entrepreneur, collaborating with Ravi Khare, with whom he also shares a passion for music through their band, Bike & Six Strings.
