Teenaged prankster Jim Majelewski is incorrigible!!! He’s a grown up Bart Simpson whose practical jokes know no limits! But after one shenanigan too many, he sent to TV psychiatrist Dr Blake whose Scientology like self-help program promises to get Jim back on the straight and narrow. But Dr Blake has a terrible secret – he’s actually in thrall of an EVIL SPACE ALIEN BRAIN! DUH DUH DUH a plot twist I bet you never saw coming… unless you saw the cover of the DVD!

This film is a prime example of Canucksploitation, the early 80s period when tax incentives and lax union rules resulted in a boom of B to Z-grade Canadian films that attempt to pass of downtown Ontario as Every City USA. Some noted directors arose during this period such as body horror maestro David Cronenberg. But there were many more who sunk back into the mire from whence they came, such as the director of THE BRAIN.

This film is a gloriously bad low budget disaster with dreadful acting, directing, effects, editing and gags that all come together in moments of delightful absurdity. If you ever wanted to watch actors awkwardly wrestle with a monster puppet, then you are in luck my friend! This movie is ground zero of people going “ARGH OH NO” while being gently bumped by a goo monster covered in more KY Jelly than a vet’s arm on calving day.

And speaking of the monster, hell, this film is a lesson in how NOT to build tension. Perhaps another movie might make you wonder… is this all in the protagonists head? Is there really a nefarious alien behind the scenes or is it all a hallucination. No such subtleties to this movie! It’s brave enough to go “HEY YOU, credits are finished, here’s a brain in a fishtank, let’s get to it!”

Laughable in both conception and execution, moments of stark brutality will nevertheless keep gore hounds happy, while a series of fun special effects set-pieces and moments of priceless absurdity are enough to elevate it above the majority of mindless, B-movie pap. At least, that’s what I think – but what do you reckon? Tell me on August 16 when we decide if this movie is RAD, BAD or MAD!
