The Cabinet of Dr Caligari: live score
Event description
THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI (1920)
Considered the quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari tells the story of an insane hypnotist who uses a brainwashed somnambulist to commit murders. The film features a dark and twisted visual style, with sharp-pointed forms, oblique and curving lines, structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles, and shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets
This early German expressionist film will be screened with a new score played live by Jessica Lindsay Smith, and Maddison Carter in LongPlay's intimate cinema space.
Jessica Lindsay Smith is a composer, performer, and sound artist who creates music that defies the boundaries of genre. Alongside drummer/percussionist Maddison Carter, they bring to life a through-composed and improvised score. Electronic manipulation of sound and improvisation bring a new perspective to the increasingly relevant triumph of silent cinema The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.
