About the CALMER® Approach

Welcome to the Official Launch of The CALMER® Approach

The CALMER Approach Limited is proud to announce the official launch of The CALMER® Approach.

  • Advancing the Understanding of Human Behaviour

  • Practical, foundational knowledge for everyone, everywhere.

  • Behaviour is part of being human. But how well do we understand it?

About The CALMER® Approach

  • The CALMER® Approach journey began in 2018, driven by a desire to rethink how human behaviour is understood, particularly within disability support.

  • Through a process of knowledge translation, CALMER evolved into a practical, evidence-informed neuro-behavioural practice and training framework, taking its current form in 2022.

  • Since then, CALMER has been shared through professional learning, training, national and international conferences, and applied across homes, schools, day programs and disability support services.

  • Since 2023, CALMER has also served as the foundational practice framework for The CALMER Approach Limited, an Australian not-for-profit and NDIS-registered provider delivering specialist behaviour support and other disability services.

Now, we are pleased to invite you to celebrate its official launch.

What is The CALMER® Approach?

  • The CALMER® Approach is an integrated, evidence-informed neuro-behavioural model, practice and training framework that builds knowledge and capacity to understand how human behaviour emerges within its context.

  • Drawing on neuroscience and behavioural science, CALMER explores how interconnected brain functions, emotions, experiences and environments influence behaviour.

  • Everyone has CALMER, yet each person's CALMER is unique to them.

  • Central to CALMER is the understanding that everyone needs to be safe and feel safe, connected, heard and understood with empathy and authenticity.

  • CALMER is not a behaviour management approach. It promotes curiosity, shared understanding, environmental adaptation and capacity building.

The environment is the focus of change. The person's capacity is the focus of support.

Who is CALMER For?

Everyone is welcome!

  • Although CALMER originated in disability support, its foundational knowledge is relevant across the lifespan and different sectors.

  • Whether you are a person with disability, family member, educator, support worker, health professional, practitioner, manager or simply interested in human behaviour, CALMER offers knowledge that can be adapted to different people, roles and contexts.

  • Understanding human behaviour is everyone's business, because behaviour is part of being human.

What Will We Share at the Official Launch?

Join us as we introduce and celebrate CALMER's journey, achievements and milestones:

  • The CALMER® Model — what it is and what it means in practice.

  • The CALMER® Practice Framework — translating understanding into practical, accessible and co-designed support.

  • The CALMER® Training — building knowledge and capacity across people, roles, services and sectors.

  • The CALMER® Journey — from its beginnings in 2018 to its development, applications and future direction.

We will also explore why the same behaviour can have different reasons, and why understanding the context matters.

The CALMER Journey So Far

The CALMER® Approach has also been providing professional training since 2022, supporting the translation of evidence-informed knowledge into everyday practice.
