    Event description

Join us for an unforgettable evening with Vincent Leggett, founder and executive director of Blacks of the Chesapeake, as he presents his book, “The Chesapeake Through Ebony Eyes” -- a rare look at the diverse history of the bay.

Hosted by The Elizabeth River Project at our Ryan Resilience Lab, this lecture will delve into the rich tapestry of African-American history and culture in the Chesapeake Bay region, highlighting the contributions of those who have shaped its maritime and seafood processing industries.

"I spent years traveling the deep and shallow reaches of the bay, and as a fellow waterman, I was welcomed into thriving and struggling shoreline communities," says Leggett. "I've listened to hundreds of stories of African American fishers, captains, and maritime business owners. The more I heard about their way of life, the more I understood how the older generation's wisdom and culture might become lost to history."

Since 1994, the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation has been dedicated to preserving this vital aspect of Americana through a variety of historical, cultural, and educational initiatives.

Book Signing: Don’t miss the opportunity to purchase a copy of “The Chesapeake through Ebony Eyes” and have it signed by the author himself.

This event promises to be an enlightening experience, celebrating the intersection of history, culture, and environmental stewardship.

Arrive early for an optional tour of the Ryan Resilience Lab at 5:00pm.
