Event description

You are invited you to the premiere of the short documentary THE CIRCLE: Fire as a Tool for Healing Country and Community, produced by Upper Shoalhaven Landcare Council in collaboration with Mongarlowe Volunteer Bushfire Brigade and the Walbunja Fire Practitioners.

On Saturday 29th June at the National Theatre in Braidwood, this event will be followed by a conversation with the Walbunja Fire Practitioners and local RFS leaders, sharing visions for the future of our region.

A Healthy Bush is a Healthy Community” - Uncle Les Simon (Walbunja Elder)

  • 3pm for a 330pm start, tea and cake will be provided upon arrival.
  • Live performance by the Reconciliation Choir and introductory speeches
  • Film screening of The Circle
  • Conversation
  • Special additional screening of Yana Djamaga Ganji (Walk Good Fire) created by the Batemans Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council and Clancy Walker.

The Circle was inspired by community momentum following the 2019-2020 bushfires to look for ways we can bring fire back into our local landscape through regular cool burns to mitigate severe bushfire risk

Showcasing a collaborative traditional burning workshop led by local First Nations fire practitioners the Walbunja Rangers alongside Mongarlowe RFS and local landowners, we see how this collaborative burning practice can strengthen both the landscape, and contribute to community resilience.

In addition, a screening of Yana Djamaga Ganji (Walk Good Fire) will begin after the Community Conversation. Created by filmmaker Clancy Walker, this documentary follows the resurgence of cultural burning in Australia’s Southeast, addressing the ongoing mismanagement of Country and the misconceptions around cultural burning as an isolated practice.

We hope you can join us.

This event is being supported by Sustainable Braidwood, a sub-committee of Upper Shoalhaven Landcare.
