Talking About Sexual Health in Disability Support
Description
Step inside an adult store and join us in conversation on sexual wellness, disability, and inclusive practice.
This is a Planet Taboo satellite event for allied health professionals and parents in the lead up to the main event in Melbourne on the 30th of March.
Sexual health is a key part of overall wellbeing, but it’s often the topic that gets skipped in clinical practice. This interactive workshop gives allied health professionals and parents a safe, fun, and practical space to explore why these conversations feel tricky, what barriers exist, and how to approach them with confidence, care, and clarity, all while surrounded by the products and tools that make sexual wellbeing tangible.
This is upstairs, so is unfortunately not accessible. However, we can provide a livestream using Google Meets.
What to expect
Setting the scene
Kick things off with a guided reflection exploring personal and societal attitudes toward sex, how they shape professional practice, and how we want these conversations to feel for ourselves and our clients.
Why don’t we talk about sex?
A facilitated discussion unpacking real barriers clinicians face — from lack of training and confidence to time pressure, referral gaps, and the stigma embedded in healthcare systems.
Sex, health, and lived experience
Through case studies and discussion, we’ll look at how illness, disability, and intersectionality impact sexual health, and where missed conversations can have lasting effects.
Practical tools for practice
Learn simple, evidence-informed frameworks and resources to support sexual health conversations in a respectful, accessible way — including referral pathways and support services.
Applied learning
Explore practical examples, including how sexual wellbeing products and tools can be discussed appropriately within professional boundaries, followed by guided reflection and group discussion — all with some hands-on context in the adult store setting.
Wrap-up and integration
Time to consolidate learning, ask questions, and reflect on how to take these conversations back into everyday practice.
