The Craft of Mending: Swiss Darning Knitwear Workshop

Swiss darning (also known as duplicate stitch) is both a precise and decorative technique used to repair knitwear that looks like the original fabric, it can be used to mend knitwear in a way that is close to invisible.  In this 3-hour workshop, participants will learn to repair sweaters, socks, and other knitted garments using this technique as well as explore its possibilities for surface decoration depending on their level of experience.

You will learn:

• How to understand a basic knit structure

• Selecting the right threads

• Repairing holes by rebuilding missing or damaged stitches

• Invisible and visible repair techniques

• When to choose Swiss mending over other methods.

This workshop is ideal for those wanting to repair knit garments with minimal visible change. Practice swatches will be provided, and participants with some experience in knitting may bring along a small knit item to work on.

Basic hand-sewing and knitting familiarity is helpful but not required. Materials provided.

• A sampler of personal swiss darning explorations.

• A darning kit including snips, needles and a selection of threads
