THE DAISYCUTTERS
Event description
The Daisycutters are a quartet responsible for some of the most ‘hummable’ tunes to come out of QLD in the last 2 decades.
Formed in the late 1990s, the band first drew attention by taking out top honours in the coveted Brisbane JJJ Unearthed competition – the first time the national youth broadcaster had looked for talent in a major city.
The years since have seen The Daisycutters transform from pop-punk darlings into distinguished gentlemen of rock, with a slew of critically acclaimed recordings to their name.
The band have now joined the roster of MADCAP Global Music, who will be releasing their brand-new album - ‘Become What You Are’.
Indie giant ‘Caroline Records’ will be distributing the album in the UK and USA, whilst Rocket Imports will service stores in Australia.
The album was recorded with acclaimed Brisbane Producer, Jeff Lovejoy, and released on limited edition White Vinyl, with the band heralding it as “…our best work yet!”
The new album is also The Daisycutters’ first new material in a decade!
“This is the first album we have ever written from scratch. In the past we’ve always had songs floating around and we would pick the best ones out of dozens of candidates” says front man/vocalist Cameron Wilson…
“We were lucky enough to be able to indulge all our sonic desires on this one, and it was absolutely one of the most enjoyable recording sessions I can remember.
I think now we’re all a bit older, we’re enjoying the process of recording, rather than just trying to ‘freight train’ through to completion”
Like all great bands though, success was a while coming…
After bursting on to the Brisbane music scene, the band soon released a self-financed E.P – the blistering ‘Gift Horse’.
The CD soon saw The Daisycutters sign a deal with Mushroom Publishing, who after actively pursuing the band, released their sophomore E.P ‘Caffeinated and Wide Eyed’ to critical acclaim in July 2000.
The E.P featured the hits “Between the Buildings” and the effervescent “Kiss me Stupid” which enjoyed high rotation on Triple J and spent 11 weeks in the charts peaking at number 8!
“Caffeinated …” also enjoyed airplay on MMM, RRR, B105, ZZZ and a host of national community stations - finally debuting in the top 5 on the Australian Independent Charts and spending 12 weeks in the top 10 – peaking at number 2.
The Daisycutters’ debut album - “Awake Among the Sleepers”, released in August 2004, left the critics unanimous in their praise, setting the benchmark for impassioned, un-pretentious rock n roll in this country.
Melbourne’s “Beat Magazine” promptly made it ‘album of the week’ and hailed their debut as …”one of the best albums you are likely to hear all year”!
The 3 singles and their film clips, enjoyed rotation on Rage, MTV and Channel V.
The success of the album saw the band relentlessly tour the country consistently wowing crowds with their electrifying live shows.
The band scored enviable slots on several festivals including a couple of appearances as part of the line-up of the famous “Big Day Out”
Over the next few years The Daisycutters shared the stage with Paul Weller, The Hellacopters, Joe Strummer, The Living End, You Am I, Eskimo Joe, Shihad, Rocket Science, Killing Heidi, The Whitlams, and many more..
As demand for out-of-print EPs increased, The Daisycutters released their 2006 CD ‘Lines and Sinkers’ (The E.P Years) which saw the band nostalgically revisit their extensive back catalogue – all of their past radio singles were finally made available on the one album for the first time!
The collection also included possibly their most memorable tune - a sweet little slice of Queensland pop – “Sick Day”.
An enormous radio fave, the song was also chosen to be the soundtrack to a ‘MasterCard’ advertising campaign enjoying massive prime time TV rotation in 2003!
In 2008 the band released their 3rd album ‘Come Sweet Bullets’- hailed by many at the time to be their best work.
Recorded in Brisbane at the home studio of good friend Darren Middleton, of Powderfinger fame (Darren also played guitar and mellotron on the album), ‘Come Sweet Bullets’ reflected a refining and maturing of the band’s sound.
Produced by the band and 2 of Brisbane’s brightest stars – Jeff Lovejoy (Midnight Oil, Cruel Sea) and Mark McElligott (Powderfinger) the album drew from many classic influences and expanded the band’s ever growing musical palette with a liberal splashing of piano, organ and vintage mellotron added into the mix.
The album continued singer/songwriter Cameron Wilson’s heartfelt ‘kitchen sink dramas’ – a murky world of late drunken nights, retrospective hangovers, hook ups and break ups – always the observer, the voyeur – always the bridesmaid…never the bride!
The new album continues the band’s music journey – and even includes an 11-minute epic!
Worlds away from their Pop/punk debut – ‘Become What You Are’ will be is out now via the streaming services and on CD and Vinyl.
