THE DEVIL AND FORTY CHICKENS is a humorous one-person show featuring José Garcia Davis embodying the roles of five characters. Cristobal, the narrator, recounts the hilarious story of how he and his teenage brothers raid a chicken farm near the Rio Grande River in central New Mexico. They stuff forty chickens into a coop that they’ve heaved onto the back of their papá’s old pickup and make their hasty escape along rutted dirt backroads. When the Devil suddenly appears and hisses his knavish temptations into Cristobal’s ear, events turn outlandishly unpredictable and the play takes on the larger than life dimensions of a good old fashioned tall tale. The show is inspired by Garcia Davis’ mischievous father and uncles as wild teenagers growing up in the New Mexican village of Bernalillo, as well as his own misadventures as a rapscallion teen.
