As part of SMRI’s Science in the Museum event for National Science Week, Mike Pritchard from the Australian Spy Museum will conduct a live demonstration of a working Enigma machine and provide an overview of the initial design and development of Enigma with the help of genuine WWII codebooks.

The successful breaking of the German Enigma machine cipher by British Mathematician, Alan Turing, and his team was one of the most critical breakthroughs of the World War II. The electromechanical Enigma machine created a cipher much stronger than those that preceded it, including settings that changed every 24 hours, and this live demonstration of the configuration and usage of Enigma emphasises the incredible work of Turing and his team as they raced to break the daily codes.

This event is suitable for senior high school students in year 10 and above and adults of all ages.
