Who it's for
This workshop is aimed at 18yo+ artists and students who are looking to get more from life drawing sessions.
No formal training is needed but we ask that you've been to at least a few life drawing sessions before. That way everyone already knows how a session runs, and class time goes to drawing.
P.S. Haven on 5th runs nude, figure drawing sessions every Tuesday 7-10PM, if you would like to get some time in or attend your first session before the workshop.
Learn to Draw Intuitively
It's a problem anyone who's been to a life drawing session experiences: The model takes their pose. The timer starts. You have mere moments to translate the infinitely complex human body into a sketch.
Where do you start? What is most important? How do you quickly get to the essence of the pose? And how do these quick sketch skills translate into longer drawings?
This workshop aims to answer these questions. Taking a non-academic, intuitive approach to art, you will learn to spot and draw the essential shapes that make up the human body. This develops a visual vocabulary that allows you to effortlessly translate what your eyes are seeing to the page.
Each day of the workshop focuses on different aspects of figure drawing, building on skills week to week. Working with a live model in guided sessions, we deconstruct the process of drawing the figure from life, pausing for in-class discussion and analysis.
It's our hope every student leaves with a new toolbox of skills to help find the joy and expressive satisfaction figure drawing brings.

Agenda
Week 1, January 20th
The first 60 seconds. Charcoal technique and gesture. You'll learn different grips, how to draw from the shoulder, and how to keep your first lines long, light, and loose. Then we work from big to small to block in the gesture of a pose. Everything else in the workshop builds on this.
Week 2, January 27th
Flowing forms. We work up the body from the feet, learning the essential shapes and lines you'll see again in every figure, with an emphasis on how one flows into the next.
Week 3, February 3rd
Hard edges. This week we draw a muscular male model and look at how body types differ. You'll learn where the body has hard edges and corners, and how to emphasize them for impact.
Week 4, February 10th
Apotheosis. We bring the first three weeks together, then cover rendering and finishing flourishes.
