Session #1 - THE ETHICS OF BANS

Date & Time: Wednesday 11 March 6:30pm AEDT

From the recent social media laws for under-16s, to prohibiting books, behaviours and beliefs – bans have become a prominent feature of our contemporary life.

While framed as providing safety, moral clarity and protection, bans almost always come at a cost. So, when is banning ethical and when does it simply make us feel righteous?

In The Ethics of Bans, Philosopher in Residence and Manos Chair in Ethics Dr Tim Dean is joined by protest rights campaigner Anastasia Radievska and reporter Cam Wilson to explore the ethics of prohibition across public policy, culture and everyday life.

When are bans justified? What responsibilities come with enforcing them? And how do bans reshape trust, freedom and belonging in society?

Join us for a thoughtful conversation about the moral limits of control and the consequences of drawing hard lines.

Session #2 - THE ETHICS OF SURRENDER

Date & Time: Wednesday 18 March 6:30pm AEDT

When should you give up the fight? Whether in war, politics, workplaces or personal relationships, when does a reluctance to concede become the most harmful option?

We surrender in negotiations, relationships, conflicts, careers and crises. Sometimes surrender is the cost we bear in order to end suffering. Sometimes it preserves dignity. Sometimes it is simply forced upon us.

In The Ethics of Surrender, Executive Director of The Ethics Centre Dr Simon Longstaff AO is joined by Rear Admiral Lee Goddard CSC and writer, broadcaster and author Catherine McGregor AM, to reflect on one of our most challenging ethical choices.

Join us for a conversation that explores the ethics of fighting on. Is surrender the same as failure? Or is it sometimes the better choice in a world shaped by power, pressure and survival? When should we not surrender?

Session #3 - THE ETHICS OF FORGIVENESS

Date & Time: Wednesday 1 April 6:30pm AEDT

Under what conditions should people offer or expect to receive forgiveness?

Does the key to forgiveness lie in genuine remorse? Or are some actions and their perpetrators so profoundly wrong that they’re ‘unforgiveable’?

In The Ethics of Forgiveness, Executive Director of The Ethics Centre Dr Simon Longstaff AO is joined by academic Dr Vincent Hurley and co-founder of the Survivor Hub Brenda Lin, to examine whether there is an ethical obligation to forgive. Can acts of forgiveness be unwarranted and unjust?  What is the relationship between forgiveness and accountability?

Join us for a nuanced discussion about justice, repair and the limits of letting go.
