Event description

For our next speaker series event in Melbourne/Naarm, we’re diving into the heart of LGBTQIA+ spaces with a three-part series exploring Queering Urbanism at different scales—starting with neighbourhoods, and continuing to buildings and cities.

The first panel on Thursday, July 25, empowered by Tract, focuses on the “Evolution of the Gaybourhood.”

For decades, LGBTQIA+ communities have been instrumental in shaping urban landscapes. We’ll explore the qualities, physical attributes, design considerations, and temporary activations that create safe and inclusive neighbourhoods. Plus, we'll discuss the ongoing challenge of preserving queer cultural fabric and what makes an inclusive neighbourhood – the people, the businesses, and the buildings.

Join us to learn about and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community’s impact on neighbourhoods, and as always, for good chats, food, and drinks.

The Panel:
Karen Bryant (she/her) - Chief Executive & Creative Director, Midsumma Festival
Sam Cremean
(they/them) - Urban Researcher and Community Engagement Specialist
Wes Snelling (he/him) - Entertainment Programmer and Co-Owner of queer venue, Grouse Bar
Josh McAlister
(he/him) - Director, CHT Architects

Moderated by:
Justin Kliger (he/him) - Principal Urban Designer, Tract
