The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission: Promoting Dialogue and Healing After Conflict
Event description
Join the Initiative for Peacebuilding's Co-Director Dr Tania Miletic in conversation with Marcus Brand to learn about the vital work of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
In the wake of the political upheavals and human rights violations surrounding the coups in Fiji from 1987 to 2006, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to examine abuses, provide a platform for survivors' voices, and promote national healing and unity.
As Chair of the Commission, Mr. Brand will be leading nationwide consultations and truth-seeking efforts across Fiji and among Fijian exile communities in Australia and New Zealand. With over 25 years of experience in democratic governance, human rights, and conflict resolution across East and Southeast Europe, South and Southeast Asia, he brings invaluable expertise to this process. Mr. Brand will share insights into the Commission's work so far across Fiji, including the Commission's mandate and truth-seeking methodology, challenges in addressing historical grievances, and approaches towards promoting reconciliation and healing.
There will be an opportunity for Q&A with the audience. This event is free and open to the public.
