Join us at the first People’s Anti-Conference to engage in solution-focused dialogue, workshops and sharing of stories for creating and sustaining social change in Leeds. Connect with community enthusiasts, professionals, artists, activists, and researchers to amplify Leeds' collective power for positive social impact.

Leeds’ First Participant-Led Anti-Conference for Social Change seeks to bring together the communities of Leeds, professionals working in and through community, researchers, community artists, activists, and everyone interested in taking action for social change in Leeds. We aim to gather the tribes to explore and share knowledges, practices, to make connections that matter and last, and to sow the seeds for solution-focused, sustainable change-making in our city and region.

Together, let's navigate the exciting possibilities for stronger, more vibrant and resilient communities in Leeds. Your presence is crucial as we embark on this transformative, interdisciplinary journey, prioritising community-led solutions that make a lasting difference. The anti-conference will take a glocal perspective, learning from both the local and global expertise in the room. Join us to explore, connect, and collaboratively craft solutions to shared challenges and opportunities.

Our Mission

Beyond the Talk Leeds Walks the Walk is committed to the power of community for creating and sustaining change. Spurred by an urgency of multiple crises, widening inequality and the imperative for social justice, we aim to explore actions to create the conditions for change across Leeds through building on our strengths.

What might happen?

The anti-conference will be a participant driven space. We encourage contributions from any and everyone interested in being involved. What form that takes is up to you. It may include, but is not limited to:

Participate in or lead workshops that move our conversations to action;
Explore and share creative ways to change making;
Share knowledges across disciplines;
Connect researchers with community knowledges;
Make connections with those who share passions and challenges;
Share and learn through stories of life and practice;
Bring groups/individuals together involved in change making to make us more than the sum of our parts;
Explore collective and compassionate routes to health & well-being;
Collectively craft solutions to challenges through strength-based and participatory practices;
Co-create spaces of belonging and connection that matter and last;

Parking

Parking is very limited on site, there are 7 spaces withing 50m walk and 7 within 100m walk. The nearest public car park is directly across the road outside Kirkstall Brewery/ITV. We recommend car sharing or jumping on public transport.

The venue has secure bike storage, a bike repair station and two toilets for changing (one is accessible). Kirkstall Road has bus lanes on both sides which can be used by cyclists making it safer and quicker!

You can also get here via public transport – the best buses from the centre of town are the 33, 34, 60 or A1 Flyer – ask the driver for the stop outside ITV Yorkshire.

Your hosts

Dee Brooks and Lee Griffiths from the Jeder Institute. Lee Griffiths, based in Australia, originally from the UK and Dee Brooks, based in Australia and an intermittent nomad, have a combined wealth of experience across 4 decades. They are leaders in Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) and Participatory Community Building and have co-hosted workshops, training and conferences in more than 20 countries! They are firm believers in the power of tapping into the collective wisdom of a community to strengthen and build on what’s already there.
