Description

A one-day professional development workshop

Sandplay and sandtray work offer powerful, non-verbal ways of accessing and expressing inner experience by giving form, in a tray of sand, to what words cannot easily reach. This experiential one-day workshop introduces the basic principles of Sandplay, drawing on the work of Mark Pearson and Helen Wilson, and explores the difference between directed sandtray (or “symbol work”) and non-directive Sandplay.

Rather than exploring the work only in theory, you will experience both approaches for yourself: a directed sandtray in the morning, and an undirected Sandplay experience in the afternoon, so you can feel, in your own body, the difference the facilitator's stance makes. The day offers a grounded, felt introduction to a modality that bridges verbal therapy and the expressive, creative therapies.

As an all-day experiential workshop, this is an opportunity to spend sustained time with the practice, learning not only about the application of Sandplay and sandtray work, but through direct experience, reflection and conversation.

Across the day, participants will have the opportunity to learn from and connect with
Cheryl Taylor, drawing on her more than 30 years of therapeutic, supervisory and teaching experience.

Who it's for:  counsellors, psychotherapists, creative arts and expressive therapists, school wellbeing staff and allied practitioners who would value a hands-on introduction to Sandplay and sandtray work.

What to expect:

•  An overview of the core principles of Sandplay, including Dora Kalff's “free and protected space”

•  A clear understanding of the difference between Sandplay and sandtray / symbol work

•  A morning experience of directed sandtray work

•  An afternoon experience of undirected Sandplay

•  Time to reflect on and discuss both experiences as a group

•  Guidance on the facilitator's role, ethical considerations, and where to learn more

Cheryl Taylor has worked in the helping professions for more than 30 years, working with individuals, couples, families and children, alongside an extensive background in teaching and supervision. She has taught and supervised postgraduate students at Deakin University, Monash University, the University of New England, the Australian College of Applied Psychology and The Cairnmillar Institute.

Fundamentally person-centred in her approach, Cheryl understands therapy and supervision as collaborative processes grounded in deep listening, compassion and trust in each person’s innate wisdom and capacity for growth. Her practice integrates creative and somatic approaches, including imagery, symbols, drawing, creative writing, storytelling and body awareness. Central to her work is the creation of a safe and protected relational space in which people can feel seen, heard, understood and valued.

Please note: this is an introductory, experiential day. A felt introduction to the principles and practice, not a qualification to practise Sandplay therapy.

This workshop is scheduled to take place on Level 1, up a flight of 17 stairs. Please contact us with your access requirements.
