The Fringe Condition: Designing for Life at the Extremes

What does it mean to design for life at the fringe of human existence — in the silence of an Antarctic winter, the isolation of a submarine, the confinement of a prison cell, or the vast emptiness of the Moon?

The Fringe Condition is an exhibition and panel discussion by the Lunar Architecture Research Group (LARG) at the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources (ATCSR), Adelaide University. Through architectural drawings, scale models, and interactive installations, we present research into one of the most radical design briefs of our time: building for sustained human life on the Moon.

Designing at the fringe means rethinking not just what we build, but how we build it. Our research explores a new model of architecture — one where humans and robots collaborate through VR technologies to transform fine abrasive lunar dust into novel shields against radiation and micrometeorites. But construction is only the beginning. How do we keep people from losing their grip on time and agency, surrounded by two weeks of unbroken light, then two weeks of total darkness? And when the body fails 380,000 kilometres from the nearest doctor, how does design enable care through telediagnosis and robotic surgery?

While the exhibition offers insight into lunar architecture, the panel discussion takes it further. It brings together designers, engineers, and researchers to ask what designing at the extremes offers the communities we are building right now — and how these solutions might reach those living at the edges here on Earth: a mining camp in the Pilbara, a prison in Yatala, or a cyclone shelter in Far North Queensland.

Design is every*where. It belongs to every*one. Especially those living at the fringe.
