The Future of Homelessness Practice Workshop - Leadership and System Perspectives

As part of Homelessness Week 2026, Shelter WA invites CEOs, Directors, Board representatives, Managers and Team Leaders to participate in The Future of Homelessness Practice Workshop: Leadership and System Perspectives.
A strong homelessness sector relies on a sustainable, supported and future-ready workforce. This workshop will bring together sector leaders to explore the strategic opportunities, challenges and priorities facing homelessness sector practice across Western Australia.
Through facilitated discussion and collaborative inquiry, participants will:
Explore the changing needs and pressures facing the homelessness sector
Identify the capabilities, supports and conditions needed for a sustainable and effective workforce
Examine workforce wellbeing, organisational resilience and leadership in the context of increasing demand
Consider the role of Lived Experience and peer expertise in strengthening governance, policy and service design
Build a shared understanding of opportunities for sector development, collaboration, commissioning reform and system improvement
Insights generated through this workshop will help inform future advocacy, workforce development, policy reform and service improvement initiatives, supporting a stronger homelessness sector and better outcomes for Western Australians experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness.

Facilitator
Dr Amity James
Amity is an Associate Professor in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance, Curtin University. She has developed a national reputation for excellence in housing research, in particular at the intersection of housing and ageing and housing policy. Amity has led numerous funded research projects from sources such as the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute, Australian Research Council and WA government, including the Investigative Panel into building and retaining an effective homelessness sector workforce, AHURI Final Report No. 409, funded and published by AHURI in 2023. Amity possesses extensive experience in qualitative research methods as well as a deep understanding of housing policy. An applied researcher, Amity uses innovative qualitative methodologies to address policy-focussed research questions and works closely with industry and government to deliver timely and relevant information to inform policy. She brings to the project a wealth of experience in designing, conducting and analysing qualitative data collections as well as refined policy analysis and evaluation skills. An experienced research manager, she has demonstrated her ability to produce high level housing research, that is both policy and industry relevant, in a timely manner.
