Join us for a fun, hands-on experience at the Filipino Drum Making Workshop – The Gandang.

The Gandang is a traditional cylindrical drum used by the Maranao tribe from the southern island of the Philippines. It is made of wood with a membrane of carabao or water buffalo skin on each side and painted and decorated with 'okiran' motifs.

In this workshop you will be making your own version of the Gandang using modern, readily available material. You will also be decorating it using the traditional vine/leaf/fern motifs used by the Maranao Artisans. Don’t worry we have a template that you could use! After you have designed your own Gandang – you will learn a few drumming techniques used in traditional ceremonial events.

Karina Tumon was born in the Philippines and came to Australia when she was 11 years old. She grew up in Ngunnawal Country/Canberra and now lives in nipaluna/Hobart with her partner and son. She is a self-taught crafter and artist and is formally trained as a graphic designer.

Please arrive on time - or better yet, a little early, as all sessions will start on time. There will be coffee and tea available while you wait, and you may even get to see the results of other workshops!
