Event description
Discover the real world setting of Ghost River
We invite you to join author, Tony Birch, on a literary walk along the banks of the Birrarung (Yarra) River, from the Abbotsford Convent to the tranquil corner of Deep Rock, where two fictional characters, Ren and Sonny, lazed away the summer days of youth. The walk will also discuss the urban myth of the supposed bunkers dug into the land during World War Two, visit the site of (perhaps) a world record high-diving feat, and pay respect to the deep time history of the river’s owners and custodians, the Wurundjeri Nation, who continue to protect and nurture the river today. During the walk, Tony will read excerpts from Ghost River, his award-winning novel.
What to expect:
· A 90-minute walking tour of the Abbotsford Convent and Deep Rock area.
· A small group with plenty of opportunities for discussion and questions.
· While every effort will be made to accommodate mobility levels, please note the tour will involve approximately 3km of walking outside, including across uneven surfaces.
Professor Tony Birch is the Boisbouvier Chair of Australia Literature at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of works including Ghost River, Women and Children, The White Girl, and Dark as Last Night.
