Event description

THE GLOOMING
Basket of Hammers and 4000 Records present their 3rd annual celebration of underground sounds.

A night of forward-leaning, independent music from some of South East Queensland’s most compelling underground artists. Rough-edged and atmospheric, where art rock, noise, and lo-fi sensibilities meet a certain unvarnished intent.

There’s tension in the space between restraint and abrasion.

Minimal gestures, heavy undercurrents.
Nothing polished. Nothing wasted.

THE GLOOMING 2025 at Old Church, BLI BLI, Kabi Kabi.

Guppy: Don't sound like anyone else. It’s post-punk, it’s noise rock, it's no wave, it’s art pop, it’s guitar-less, there’s wild saxophone, but saying all that only tells you part of the story; it’s a dizzying array of cool. There’s an accidental alchemy formed from the simplicity and joy of friendship and explorational jams.
Those who have seen their hectic live show can attest to their magnetism. Guppy features members of some of QLD’s most exciting bands of the last decade: Clever, Cured Pink, Per Purpose, Psy Ants and Come Die in Queensland. The quartet relish in the spirit of creation on their deeply engrossing debut album 777antasy.

Refedex: Do the mid-tempo, antipodean dust and dirt, rock-and-roll thing. They put a record out late in 2021 to little fanfare, as is their want. They trundle along at songs about alcohol, leather, love, and willow, doing their thing with a total of ten strings, three skins, a couple of cymbals, and their breath.

Post punk noise rockers. Thick bobbing basslines meet snaky, mysterious guitar lines with build ups that build and build with no release. Tension abounds, harmonics chime and floor toms pound. Every song is a sneaky killer, making its way into your unconscious mind.

Moth Trap builds quiet storms from broken loops, soft synths, and half-spoken confessions. Drawing from the wreckage of post-rock, coldwave, and memories that blur at the edges, they craft songs that feel like transmissions from a collapsing future. Finding inspiration in the liminal spaces between urban life and untamed nature, Moth Trap explores themes of introspection, transformation, and the interplay between the digital and organic worlds.

Diaspora The Explorer weaves layered, atmospheric pieces using vocal loops, synths, and doom-adjacent textures. Rooted in experiences of cultural drift and life on the periphery, the sound sits between deconstructed song and ambient exploration. Themes of identity, belonging, and adaptation surface through brooding tones and spacious repetition—music that holds space for uncertainty while tracing the emotional residue of movement, place, and memory.
