Event description

Polarisation is reshaping nations, but is Australia on the same path? In this compelling conversation, we’ll examine whether our divides could deepen to the extent seen in the US. With a focus on finding uncommon ground, our panel will explore the forces driving polarisation here—media dynamics, identity politics, economic divides—and ask what could still pull us back from the brink. Moderated by Adam Spencer, this conversation brings together:

  • Claire Lehmann: (Quillette founder), who brings a critical view on the cultural forces shaping public debate
  • Bill Kelty: former union leader and advocate for economic fairness as a foundation for unity
  • Waleed Aly: academic and commentator known for his commitment to balanced, thoughtful discourse

Expect a nuanced, practical discussion that digs deep into the problem, and asks: Can Australia chart a different course?
