The epitome of Broadway royalty, Lillian Hall (Lange), has never let anything get in the way of a performance, not even her own daughter. During rehearsals for her upcoming play, however, she begins to find her confidence shaken and for the first time in her illustrious career, is concerned about being able to take to the stage. While the play's producer is ready to fire her, her director David (Jesse Williams) and assistant Edith (Bates) are sympathetic to her struggles, encouraging her to preserve through the challenges before her. As she pushes on she finds herself navigating a path she hasn't walked before - balancing her desire for the spotlight with the stark demands of the real world.
