The Harvey Girls -- The Women Who Tamed the Wild West
Event description
Please join us at the beautifully renovated "Grasshopper Gatherings" event space for an all-American Apple Pie Tea Party. On May 11th, Carol Kenealy will be telling the story of an almost forgotten chapter in American History. Wearing a replica of an actual "Harvey Girl" uniform, she will introduce you to the thousands of brave young women who left their homes in the East to help build Fred Harvey's amazing restaurant empire along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad line.
Although they couldn't know it at the time -- the Harvey Girls were making history. They married ranchers, cowboys, farmers, railroad workers. As they raised their families and worked the land -- they were settling the West.
Your Buffalo Bill Museum "hosts" will be wearing period clothing -- and we encourage you to do the same! We'll be serving homemade apple pie (ala mode, of course) with tea or coffee. After eating our pie -- Carol will present her program on the lower level of Grasshopper's -- so there are some steps involved. (but with a very sturdy railing on both sides).
Will Rogers said, "Fred Harvey supplied the West with food -- and wives."
