About the class:

This workshop is for all levels, from those who have never written poetry to published poets.

We are living in a time when individual and collective trauma in our society is at an all-time high. From sociopolitical and economic unrest, to the COVID-19 pandemic, to natural disasters, ordinary folks feel the emotional fallout and are seeking mental health services and other means to process and heal from their experiences. We will read poetry about trauma from well-regarded poets and discuss their work. We will work on writing about trauma from our own perspectives both from prompts as well as individually-generated. The focus will be on content primarily, with some adjacent teaching about craft to hone poems into literary works. All materials will be provided for students.

Open to female-identifying participants age 18 and older.

About the artist: Morrow Dowdle

Morrow Dowdle has been published in numerous journals and anthologies and nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net. They edit and critique poetry for Sunspot Literary Review and run a performance series and open mic called "Weave & Spin," featuring marginalized voices. They have previously led workshops on trauma and poetry for organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Health and the Orange Correctional Center. In addition to poetry, they work as a physician assistant in mental health care.
