The Hidden Waters of Springbrook: Groundwater and Gondwana Rainforest Survival

Join us at the May Gecko Talk with Dr Grant Periott for a fascinating exploration of one of South East Queensland’s most significant natural landscapes.

Over the past five years, scientists, Traditional Owners, government agencies and the community have collaborated on the Springbrook Groundwater Investigation, an ambitious research and monitoring project seeking to better understand how water moves through, is stored within, and is released from the ancient Gondwana landscapes of Springbrook.

Discover the remarkable story of Springbrook’s World Heritage-listed rainforests and learn how groundwater supports the ecosystems, streams and drinking water catchments that sustain both nature and communities. Gain insight into the cutting-edge science revealing the hidden workings of this deep-time landscape and how this knowledge is helping to shape future environmental policy and land management practices.

The talk will also explore the cultural significance of Springbrook, highlighting how community values and Traditional Owner knowledge have played a central role in the project’s success. Finally, hear about the exciting next chapter: the establishment of the Springbrook Critical Zone Observatory, a long-term research initiative that will connect our hinterland with national and international scientific networks.

Whether you are passionate about conservation, water security, rainforest ecosystems, or the future of our natural environment, this is a unique opportunity to learn more about the hidden processes that keep Springbrook alive.
