Newcastle Youth Orchestra with The Barbarians Orchestra

A community celebration of all things pastoral.

More than fifty musicians take the stage at the Con this September, as Newcastle Youth Orchestra joins forces with The Barbarians Orchestra for an afternoon in the countryside.

At the heart of the programme: Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music. The Hills Are Alive, My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi and Edelweiss, played by a full symphony orchestra.

Around it, two of the loveliest evocations of the natural world ever written. Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, the Pastoral, his portrait of a day in the country, complete with birdsong, a village dance and a thunderstorm. And Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergne, including the famous Baïlèro, a shepherd's song from the hills of southern France.

Newcastle Youth Orchestra is a not for profit organisation providing orchestral training and performance opportunities for young musicians across the Hunter. The University of Newcastle is the home of the Newcastle Youth Orchestra.
