What qualities make an interpreter truly exceptional?

Many professional development events for interpreters focus on best practice, ethics, professionalism, and skill development. But how often do we have the opportunity to hear directly from a panel of Deaf people about what they value most in an interpreter?

Join us for a unique panel discussion featuring six Deaf Australians from diverse backgrounds as they share their experiences working with interpreters across a range of everyday settings.

Together, the panel will explore questions such as:

• What helps Deaf people feel respected, included, and empowered?
• Can you tell us about a time an interpreter did a really great job?
• What common mistakes have you seen hearing interpreters make?
• How can interpreters help ensure Deaf people have equal power in group conversations and decision making?
• Do Deaf people find it easy to give feedback to interpreters, and how can interpreters respond well to that feedback?
• How can interpreters balance their own wellbeing and professional needs while still keeping Deaf clients at the centre of the interaction?

This is a rare opportunity to gain valuable insights into interpreting through the perspectives of Deaf people who work with interpreters regularly.

Whether you are a practising interpreter, interpreting student, educator, service provider, or Deaf community member, this discussion will offer practical ideas, honest reflections, and thought provoking conversations about what excellence in interpreting looks like from a Deaf perspective.
