Tue, 27 May, 5:30pm - 7:30pm NZST

Event description

Filmed across seven Pacific nations — Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Kuki Airani (Cook Islands), Samoa, Niue, and Aotearoa (New Zealand) — "Vai" is a stunning cinematic journey that celebrates the power of culture, connection, and community.

Told through the eyes of one woman, Vai, portrayed by a different Indigenous actress in each country, this poignant film weaves a beautiful narrative of growth, empowerment, and identity.

From childhood to elderhood, Vai’s story highlights the shared strength and resilience of Pacific women across generations and borders. Produced and directed by an all-female team of Pacific filmmakers, "Vai" is not only a visual love letter to the Pacific — it is a heartfelt exploration of belonging, tradition, and the ties that bind us to each other and our land.

Why We're Screening It:

With this screening, we're honouring Samoan Language Week, Samoan Independence Day, and Tongan Independence Day — all taking place within the same week.  Through the powerful storytelling of "Vai," we celebrate the vibrant cultures, voices, and histories of the Pacific, and invite our Queenstown community to connect with these stories of strength, identity, and belonging.
