Event description

Calling all funny folk!

Comedian and event producer Anna Brennan is running The Jester Guild, her crash course in standup comedy, in Gympie this March. Over one weekend students will learn different methods of writing material, as well as performance tips. They will hone their skills into a five minute stand-up comedy set which they will be invited to perform at a local comedy show.

As part of Youth Week the Gympie Regional Council are sponsoring twelve spots in the course for students aged 15-25. These students can sign up for just $10 instead of $180.

Anna is fresh from performing at Queerly Beloved, a sold out show at Melbourne International Comedy Festival. She has performed at and produced over 100 comedy shows, published a children's book called A Dragon is Coming, and written and directed an award winning one act comedic play. She's taking her solo show, Tinderella, to Melbourne International Comedy Festival for a run of ten performances this April.

The course will be held over two days at the Australian Institute of Country Music:

10am - 3pm Saturday 29th of April

10am - 3pm Sunday 30th of April

Students are required to bring something to write on and with (notebook & pen or device) and their own lunch (fridge available). Morning & afternoon tea will be provided.

Here's what some past students have to say about the course:

"A comprehensive and supportive crash course on the ins and outs of stand-up comedy for beginners, Anna Brennan is a dynamo 5/5 chocolate covered pretzels." Brendon Beltrame, Gympie.

"Anna's course was a great intro to the art of stand-up comedy, and a reminder of why I love this weird, impossible, rewarding, beast. There was a great mix of theory and practice, and the opportunity to meet other people involved in the Queensland comedy scene was a great bonus." Jodie Van De Wetering, Rockhampton.

"My favourite bit was sharing our ideas and getting the feedback. I thought it was cool we had a supportive group and it was interesting to hear everyone’s ideas on the same topic. I’m just really glad I did it and had a great time." Ryan Anderson, Eumundi.

This course is for ages 15+ and comes with adult language and content warnings. Places are strictly limited so get in quick if you want to sign up.
