The Jewish Studio Process: The Stories We Retell

This week's and next week's learning is dedicated in loving memory of Harvey Potashman z"l, in commemoration of his yahrzeit. We are grateful to Meyer, Michele Potashman and family for generously sponsoring this week's learning in his memory.

In this week's Torah portion, Devarim, Moses stands at the edge of the promised land knowing he will not cross over. What does he do? He tells the whole story again — a final act of memory, love, and letting go.

We, too, can reach for this toolkit in moments of transition. We retell our own stories, sorting through what we've inherited and what we've lived. Some of what we carry gives us strength. Some of it no longer fits who we are becoming.

Using the Jewish Studio Process, a unique methodology that combines art therapy practices with a reimagined approach to Jewish learning, we will explore the stories we tell — the ones we've received, the ones we've made, and the ones we're ready to rewrite. What do we want to take with us? What are we ready to leave behind?

No prior art experience or Jewish text background needed.

Hannah Richman Kearney (she/her) is a Jewish educator, Director of the Well at Temple Beth Elohim, and a painter. She came to the Jewish Studio Process through her two deepest passions — Judaism and art. Through her acrylic paintings, Hannah explores the way light meets land, captured in the flash of paint. Her fascination with landscape is rooted in part in her upbringing in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, a formerly industrial town in the foothills of Appalachia. She received her B.A. in painting from Brandeis University in 2010 and has since worked as an educator and artist in the Jewish world, living in Framingham, Massachusetts.
