The King's Singers
Event description
C L O S E H A R M O N Y
For over half a century, The King’s Singers have been synonymous with impeccable blend, radiant tone, and joyful music-making. Formed in 1968 by six choral scholars from King’s College, Cambridge, the group quickly earned an international reputation for their unique approach to “close harmony” — a seamless weaving of voices across centuries and styles. Today, their performances continue to enchant audiences from London to Los Angeles, and now, back in Aotearoa.
This bespoke programme, created especially for their March 2026 tour, offers a journey through The King’s Singers’ remarkable musical history. Beginning with their earliest repertoire from the late 1960s, the evening will move through Renaissance sacred music, English folksong, jazz standards, pop classics, and contemporary works. Expect Byrd alongside Billy Joel, madrigals alongside The Beach Boys, Disney magic alongside dazzling new arrangements from the songwriters of today.
The concert also carries a special significance — it will be one of the final New Zealand appearances for long-standing baritone Chris Bruerton. A proud Kiwi, Chris has been a cornerstone of The King’s Singers for over a decade, touring the world and helping shape their modern sound. His farewell tour offers Wellington audiences a rare chance to celebrate his artistry on home soil.
A highlight of the night will be the “Something Borrowed” segment, where the ensemble will present a pair of songs chosen especially for Wellington — a personal gift to the local audience, performed in their signature style.
With wit, warmth, and unparalleled musicianship, The King’s Singers promise an evening that is both a celebration of their legacy and a showcase of their continuing innovation. Whether you’ve followed their journey for decades or are hearing them for the first time, Close Harmony at Wellington Cathedral will be a night to remember.
