The Last Castrato

At the height of the castrati fame up to 4000 boys a year were castrated in the hopes of operatic superstardom. This work in progress development, is the story of Alessandro Moreschi - the last castrato to have ever lived. Born in a time when castration for the purposes of singing was allowed by the Catholic church, but lived during its ban by the incoming pope. He straddled the divide between conflicting ideologies and religious convictions. His life, challenged the gender norms of the day and gives rise to the discussion of current gender norms.

 He was not the best, he was not the worst, he was simply the last.

Ben is a singer and actor with an extraordinary vocal range and skills set which combine to create a unique artistry and performance style that crosses many genres.

Originally from Western Australia, now a Randwick local, Ben has performed extensively in Australia and overseas.
