The Layered Surface: Surface Design and Hand-Building

Learn how to turn handmade clay pieces into vibrant works of art. Build your own forms like mugs, bowls, platters, etc., while exploring layered textures and patterns to create a professional, multi-dimensional finish.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll create ceramic pieces to use as a canvas for your designs.

With step-by-step guidance and one-to-one support, you’ll learn how to combine form, colour and texture to produce unique works that reflect your personal style.

The session begins with a demonstration covering hand-building techniques and the application of coloured clay slips. You’ll then create your own pieces using studio tools, including templates and moulds, with plenty of guidance throughout. We’ll wrap up with a relaxed group discussion, sharing ideas and celebrating each participant’s work.

About the artist:
Jay is a Mullumbimby-based Ceramic Artist working from her studio, Jay Ceramics. Her practice explores surface, texture and layering, using clay as a canvas for pattern and mark-making. Through her workshops, she supports participants to confidently combine form and surface while developing their own creative voice.

What’s included:
All materials and equipment are provided, including bisque firing; additional glaze firing services available on request.

Work will be ready collection or shipping details after bisque firing. Shipping available at an additional cost.                   

What to bring:
Please bring an apron and wear closed-toe shoes. The workshop takes place in an active studio environment.
