Event description

As May fast approaches, so does Rape Awareness Week in New Zealand. Kicking off on Monday 6 May, this is a crucial time for all of us to increase society's understanding of sexual abuse, the impact it can have on victims/survivors and their loved ones, and highlight the support services that are available.

Join HELP Auckland and Dear Em on Monday 6 May at 6pm for a fundraising screening and panel discussion of the powerful new documentary THE LIEwhich delves into the tragic murder of Grace Millane.

Our panel discussion and Q&A after the screening will feature lead academics in violence against women, Paulette Benton-Greig and Nicola Gavey, as well as Youth Advocate, Layba Zubair, Youth Community Development Worker, Imogen Stone, and our Director, Kathryn McPhillips, as moderator.

About the documentary

Grace was a 21-year-old British tourist whose disappearance in Auckland after a Tinder date in 2018 sparked international attention.

Eight days after her disappearance, a 26-year-old man was charged with her murder. Grace’s body was found in the Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland the following day.

Her case was a turning point in history – an appalling 21st century dating app crime investigated before a live audience.
