The Linocut – What a Relief!

With Kerry Ann Smith

Develop new and exciting imagery based on the compositional styles of the German expressionists during the Weimar Era and also the Cubists (multiple viewpoints).

You will create and stylise on image based on your own choice of subject matter.

With guided instruction you will gain knowledge and application of the principles of composition, with regards to carving. Then you will learn how to prints at home; practising image transfer, hand-printing (without press) and editing to create an original set of prints.

Learning Objectives

·         Compose and stylise an image in black and white based on your own subject matter/theme.

·         Transfer you image onto the block

·         Carve the image in relief using a variety of techniques that exploit/express your idea/intention.

·         Set up the printing station, inking area and prepare the paper.

·         Ink the block, handprint by burnishing and pull the print.

·         Create an edition of 3-5 prints with conventional editing and labelling.

Please wear closed in shoes

Supplies required to bring

Tuesday, September 23, from 6pm to 8.30pm

Week 1

·         References – images, photographs, photocopies or magazines for montage collage and or direct drawing

·         Lino Block – traditional grey silk cut

·         Paper – Rice or Litho (minimum 10 sheet of equal size)

·         Pencil, ball point pen, scissors, glue

·         Stanley knife and carving tools

 Tuesday, September 30, from 6pm to 8.30pm

Week 2

·         All previous equipment and supplies

·         Roller, spoon or brayer

·         Printing Ink (instructors preference Sakura)

Smith studied printmaking at the Queensland College of Art and been successful winning prizes and commissioned works with her prints. She was high-school art teach for 35 years and Head of Art and Language at Mackay North Strate High from 1995 -2024.
