Description

Your next friendship could start here.

Making friends as an adult is weirdly hard.

You can be surrounded by coworkers, classmates, family, social-media followers, and people you casually know and still wish you had someone to call for brunch, a museum trip, a concert, or a random Saturday adventure.

That is exactly why I created The Living Room: Spring Thaw.

The Living Room is a free, friendship-first gathering for adults who want to meet new people without the pressure of dating, professional networking, loud nightlife, or needing alcohol to loosen up.

On Saturday, April 17, the Fredericksburg Branch Theater will be transformed into one big, beautifully furnished living room with cozy seating, warm lamps, colorful lighting, soft R&B, mocktails, games, books, and easy ways to start a conversation.

You can bring someone with you, but you absolutely do not need a plus-one. The whole experience is being designed so that arriving by yourself does not feel awkward.

Find Your Place in the Room

Settle into The Living Room, our main lounge onstage, where you can relax on the couch, listen to the music, and join a conversation.

Stop by The Reading Room to browse books, talk about what you are reading, or choose a free book to take home.

Pull up a chair at The Game Table for cards, dominoes, Uno, chess, puzzles, and the kind of conversation that happens naturally when everyone has something to do.

Visit The Bar Cart for a complimentary mocktail, nonalcoholic drink, or water. The event is intentionally alcohol-free, but the drinks will still feel grown, social, and worth putting in a cute glass.

Turn “We Should Hang Out” Into a Real Plan

One of the main features of the event is Open Invitations, a friendship bulletin board where you can complete this sentence:

“I want a friend to go to __________ with me.”

Maybe you need someone for brunch, a farmers market, a concert, a museum, a walking group, a movie, or that restaurant you keep saving on Instagram.

Add a public social-media handle if you feel comfortable, place your card on the board, and see who else wants to do the same thing.

You will also be able to create a conversation badge with a prompt like:

  • Ask me about my comfort show.

  • I need a concert friend.

  • Currently obsessed with…

  • I will always say yes to…

  • I am looking for friends who enjoy…

So if you never know how to start talking to someone new, do not worry. We are building the opening lines into the room.

This Is for You If…

You want more local friends.

You recently moved, changed jobs, ended a relationship, became a parent, started working from home, outgrew an old social circle, or simply realized that your life could use a few more people in it.

The experience is being created especially with millennial adults in mind, but you do not have to fit into one exact box to feel welcome.

This is not a dating mixer, singles event, networking function, or vendor fair.

Nobody is asking what you do for a living before deciding whether you are worth talking to.

You can read, play a game, enjoy a drink, sit quietly for a while, or introduce yourself to someone whose badge makes you laugh.

There is no formal presentation and no required way to participate.

Just enter the room, find something that feels comfortable, and let the next conversation begin there.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Living Room really free?

Yes. The Living Room: Spring Thaw is completely free and open to the public. There is no admission fee and nothing inside the event requires a purchase.

Do I need a ticket or advance registration?

No. Advance tickets and registration are not required.

Guests will check in when they arrive for attendance purposes. Entry will be available until the room reaches its safe capacity, so arriving earlier is encouraged.

Following or responding to this event page does not reserve admission.

Can I attend by myself?

Absolutely. The event is intentionally designed to feel comfortable whether you arrive independently or bring someone with you.

Conversation badges, games, shared activities, and Open Invitations will give you natural ways to begin talking without having to walk up to a stranger and invent an opening line from scratch.

No plus-one is required to belong in the room.

What age group is this for?

The Living Room is an adult social experience created especially with millennial adults in mind, including both younger and elder millennials.

You do not need to be born within one exact set of years to attend. The atmosphere, music, activities, and conversations are simply being designed with grown adults—and the realities of making friends in adulthood—at the center.

Is this a dating or singles event?

No. The Living Room is friendship-first.

It is not a dating mixer, hookup event, singles night, or speed-dating experience. Romantic connections are not the purpose of the event, and guests are expected to respect that.

Is this a networking event?

Also no. You are welcome to talk about your work if it comes up naturally, but nobody is expected to pitch a business, collect contacts, or lead with a job title.

You are here as a person—not a résumé.

Will alcohol be served?

No. The Living Room is an intentionally alcohol-free event.

The Bar Cart will offer complimentary mocktails, nonalcoholic beverages, and water. Final selections will depend on availability and participating beverage partners.

Will there be food?

Light refreshments may be available, but The Living Room should not be treated as a full meal.

Specific food and beverage offerings—and any available ingredient or allergen information—will be shared closer to the event.

Are the books really free?

Yes! Guests may browse the Take-Home Books and choose a book to keep.

The books are gifts, not merchandise, and cannot be resold at the event. Availability and selection will vary, so everyone is asked to be considerate when choosing.

Do I have to participate in the activities?

Not at all.

You can join a game, browse books, complete an Open Invitation, create a conversation badge, enjoy a drink, listen to the music, or simply sit somewhere comfortable until you feel ready to engage.

There is no formal presentation and no required level of social energy.

What is an Open Invitation?

Open Invitations is a friendship bulletin board where guests can complete the sentence:

“I want a friend to go to __________ with me.”

You might post that you want someone to join you for brunch, a concert, a museum, a movie, a farmers market, or another shared activity.

Adding a public social-media handle is optional. Only share information you are comfortable making visible to other adult attendees. Do not post phone numbers, home addresses, or other sensitive personal information.

What should I wear?

Whatever makes you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.

There is no formal dress code. The room will be stylish and photo-friendly, but this is not an event where you need to buy an outfit or prove anything. Cute and comfortable will serve you well.

What kind of music will be played?

Expect low-volume R&B and soul selected to create warmth without overpowering conversation.

The music will support the room—not turn it into a loud day party where everyone has to yell directly into someone else’s eyebrow.

What if I am shy, introverted, or socially anxious?

Then this event was built with you in mind too.

You will not be forced into an icebreaker, introduced to the whole room, or required to speak publicly. You can begin with a book, a game, a badge prompt, or a shared interest instead of starting with small talk.

Take your time. Participation can happen at your pace.

Is the event accessible?

The experience will include floor-level seating and several ways to participate without needing to access the stage.

Guests with specific accessibility questions or accommodation needs are encouraged to contact The Shirlette Collective before the event so available options can be discussed.

Can I bring my children?

No. The Living Room is an adults-only social experience, and children will not be admitted.

Childcare will not be provided, and the activities, atmosphere, seating, and refreshments are being planned exclusively for adult guests. Please make childcare arrangements before attending.

Can businesses sell products or promote services at the event?

No. The Living Room is not a vendor fair.

Approved partners may receive tasteful recognition for helping furnish or supply an area, but guests will not be expected to hear sales pitches, make purchases, or provide personal information.

Will photographs or video be taken?

Event photography or video may be captured for documentation and future promotion.

Additional information about photography, designated areas, and how to communicate that you do not wish to be featured will be available at the event.
