The magnificent Evans Street Grassland
Event description
Evans Street Grassland is the jewel in the crown of Melbourne's grasslands. If you only ever go to one grassland in your life, this is the one. With over 100 species packed into two hectares, it's great to explore.Â
Only a tiny fraction, maybe 2%, remains of the vast grassy plains that once stretched from the Yarra River all the way to South Australian border. Patches as good as Evans Street are just a fraction of that, a living museum of the former glory of the Victorian Volcanic Plain.
We'll meet for an introductory talk at the Environment Centre just next door (to the left of the grassland, the opposite end to the supermarket). And we'll be joined by Hume City Council's Urban Biodiversity Officer, who will take us out to see what we can find. There will be field guides available.
