Bower Reuse and Repair Centres offers a selection of Introduction to Woodwork Courses to choose from as part of The Maker Series.
The Bower’s Make Your Own Toolbox course will provide you with the skills and foundations to undertake small DIY woodwork projects by guiding you through the process of creating your own multi-function toolbox using reclaimed and repurposed materials.
You will learn about working with hand and power tools, timber selection, measuring and planning for projects and different finishing techniques for timber. You will gain an understanding of workshop terminology and techniques that will allow you to approach your own projects with confidence.
This course will take place over 6 x 3-hour sessions starting from the 24th April and running every Monday night 6-9pm.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing The Bower’s 6-week course you will:
Be able to safely operate woodworking tools and machinery
Understand and use carpentry terminology
Be confident with basic woodwork techniques and practices
Understand basic information on timber properties and types
Appreciate the benefits of sustainability and reuse in DIY projects
Have sufficient know-how to select and prepare reclaimed timber
Be able to read basic plans, measure for and develop your own plans, and create cutting lists
Understand joining and fixing techniques
Appreciate different finishing techniques and understand what is needed for ongoing maintenance
Feel empowered to take on other creative projects
Have your own functional toolbox, made by your own hand!
Skill Level
This course is suitable for beginners (18 years and over) with no prior woodwork experience.
Accessibility
The Bower’s instructors are experienced at facilitating courses for individuals living with disability. Please let us know about any special requirements prior to enrolment so that our staff can prepare in advance.
Tools and Materials
All tools and materials relating to the project will be provided by The Bower, however we do ask that participants ensure that long hair is tied back, and appropriate footwear (closed-in) shoes are worn.
Please bring along the following PPE:

Earmuffs or earplugs

Entrance to workshop
Workshop entrance is via Turner Street at the rear of 107 Redfern St. If the doorway is locked and/or unattended pls ring the doorbell on the left of the roller door.
Transportation and parking
Bower Woodworks is located within 5-minute walking distance of Redfern Train Station. Both metred and unmetered parking are available nearby.
