The Mallee Series: Why Mathematics Education Matters in a Changing World

La Trobe University is proud to present The Mallee Series - an annual event that will bring the Mildura community together to explore the critical policies, social issues and opportunities shaping regional Australia.
Join internationally recognised mathematics educator, Professor Anna Stokke from the University of Winnipeg (Canada) for a compelling conversation about why strong mathematics education matters for our children, our workforce, our economy and the future of our communities. Anna will also discuss why every young person needs access to excellent mathematics teaching and why this challenge belongs to us all.
Doors will open at 5.30pm, allowing time for registration and networking ahead of the keynote address, commencing at 6.15pm. The evening will be hosted by Professor Joanna Barbousas, Pro Vice-Chancellor Education Impact and Innovation and Dean of the School of Education at La Trobe University.

Professor Anna Stokke
Professor Anna Stokke is a mathematics professor at the University of Winnipeg, Canada. She is a recipient of the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Canada's top award for post-secondary teaching excellence and educational leadership. She is the co-founder and President of Archimedes Math Schools, a non-profit after-school math program, and host of the Chalk & Talk podcast, where she interviews leading education experts on evidence-informed math teaching and education policy. Her mathematics education work focusses on translating research into actionable recommendations for educators and policymakers.
Professor Joanna Barbousas
Professor Joanna Barbousas is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education, Impact & Innovation) and Dean of the School of Education at La Trobe University. She has more than 29 years of experience in education, spanning teaching practice, teacher education, and education policy, and has held senior leadership roles in universities as well as serving in peak sector leadership positions. Since joining La Trobe in 2016, she has led the strategic transformation of the School of Education, establishing it as a leading national provider of teacher education. Her leadership has strengthened research, industry partnerships, and government engagement, with a focus on evidence-informed practice and workforce development. Professor Barbousas has overseen the development of significant initiatives, including the award winning NEXUS program, Australia’s employment based pathway for teachers in regional, rural, and hard-to-staff schools. She has also spearheaded the creation of research and practice labs in literacy, numeracy, and education innovation that are influencing national debates on teaching quality and workforce development. She is regularly invited to contribute to government advisory groups, steering committees, and expert panels.
